Learning More About Servers and Workstations

Many establishments require the use of computers. When you go to establishments that make heavy use of computers, you will come across the terms servers and workstations. Though you come across these two terms, you might not know the differences between the two. For most people, they think that every computer user has an entire processor all to themselves. Even in the past, this was not true. The processing power of computer networks comes from a central mainframe referred to as the server. Individual workstations will be connected to this server. The main processor receives work from each workstation through the limited time that they get. This kind of processing is no longer evident with the existence of personal computers. In this modern day and age, your personal computer is your workstation. Servers, on the other hand, function as central machines that provide your workstations with necessary data.

When you say servers, you are referring to computers with the purpose of handling data requests from other computers. Website servers are the source of data of for computers of visitors to display them in web pages. For the servers of the local network of companies, however, they provide files to every computer of the employees. While servers have it in them to host applications, you can only access the said applications with the use of your computers. Employees will not sit down and work on a server to do their job. They only do so when their work is related to the maintenance of the server.

If you sit down on your desktop or laptop computer to create a presentation or report, you are using a workstation. Their sole purpose is to generate your presentation or text file. If you look at an average server-workstation model, the computer that you use for work is a workstation. In present-day terminology, though, the term workstation is used to refer to high-end computers in the office that do complicated computational tasks. Some of these complicated tasks include graphic rendering and design and advanced data modeling.

When it comes to basic hardware, you can expect the same thing between servers and workstations. They both have network adapters, processors, RAM, and hard drivers. You can even take a desktop tower and transform its software from that of a workstation to that of a server. For the optimization of servers, there are companies that sell a range of specialized hardware. To stack server racks, you have the server blade. When you look at servers, you will not see a video card that you can plug into a screen. For the maintenance of server computers, server administrators will only need to log into the server using their desktops and laptops. You can easily transform workstations into servers. Unfortunately, you cannot use the specialized hardware in servers for your simple workstations.
